Best of the Best – Tito Paketh

Tito Paketh played for Bulawayo Rockets, Olympics FC, Old Miltonians, but it was at Bulawayo-based Highlanders that the midfield kingpin really made a lasting impression in the 1980s. He starred in the Bosso side that conquered all. He also had a stint in Germany, having moved there with team-mates, Madinda Ndlovu and Willard Khumalo. Here is his Best of the Best.

My Best Team

I played for many teams but Highlanders will always be my best. I enjoyed the game and everyone there made me feel at home. Highlanders were always run professionally, with great vision and success.

My Best Coach

There is only one coach I really enjoyed working under – Barry Daka. He was my best coach and friend. We used to tease each other when we were both players and later when he became our coach. He was matured in the game and that made him a successful coach.

My Best Ever Zimbabwean Player

There are two – Joel Shambo, the former Caps United ace who made football look simple and former Black Aces midfielder, David Machineripi, who did wonders on the pitch.

My Best Stadium

At Barbourfields Stadium, I enjoyed every single moment because the turf was good and the atmosphere was always electrifying for our opponents.

My Best African Footballer

I don’t see any player in this continent who matched the silky skills of Nigerians, Austin “Jay Jay” Okocha and Nwanko Kanu. Those were naturally gifted players who made football entertaining. No wonder whenever the game is mentioned, their names always pop up.

My Best Highlanders 11

Peter Nkomo, Mercedes Sibanda, Netsai Moyo, Alexander Maseko, Douglas Mloyi, Willard Khumalo, Tito Paketh, Titus Majola, David Phiri, Nhamo Shambira, Madinda Ndlovu. Super-sub: Dumisani Ngulube; Coach: Bary Daka assisted by Cosmas Zulu and team manager, Lawrence Phiri.
