Sharon Tavengwa has taken a lengthy break from full marathon, following a disappointing sixth finish in a major marathon in France this past weekend.

This compounded a disappointing year for her, marred by injury and loss of form. Admitting her mistake of having entered the race while still lacking fitness, Tavengwa believed she would need close to a year to get back in shape for a full marathon.

“My hip and knee were terrible and I felt lots of pains. I was not in the top shape for the race and not good enough for a marathon,” said the Netherlands-based runner.

The past 12 months have not been kind to the 30-year-old, who picked a virus while competing in Morocco last year, which sidelined her for three months. She later sustained a knee injury that kept her out for six weeks.

The only positive was her victory in the Utrecht Marathon in the Netherlands, which qualified her for the Olympic Games, which she could not finish due to the recurring injury.
