Zimbabwe crash out of World Cup

A disappointing Zimbabwe have crashed out of the Twenty 20 World Cup after a humiliating 10 wicket defeat at the hands of neighbours South Africa in their last group match in Hambantota on Thursday.

The defeat, coming hard on the heels of a 82 run loss to Sri Lanka on Tuesday, brings to an end Zimbabwe’s participation in the competition and their 14th consecutive defeat in Twenty 20 cricket.

The loss also follows tradition as Zimbabwe were also eliminated the same way at the 2007 and 2010 editions of the same 12-team tournaments.

Even worse is the fact that the Zimbabweans could not even reach 100 runs after being restricted to a paltry 93 for eight in 20 overs, with their top scorer being Craig Ervine who recorded 37 runs.

The rest were a disappointment with the usually reliable Hamilton Masakadza going out with only six runs.

Like a pack of cards, the top order of Masakadza, Vusi Sibanda, Brendan Taylor, Graeme Crème, and Stuart Matsikenyeri crumbled and at one time Zimbabwe were 51 for 5.

Sibanda was bowled out for a duck, Taylor went out for four, Graeme Crème on six while Matsikenyeri went out for 11.

South Africa won the toss and sent Zimbabwe to bat first but the Zimbabweans’ paltry 93 run target was too little.

South Africa who, helped by Richard Levi on 50 runs and Hashim Amla on 32, easily knocked off the target with 44 balls remaining. The South Africans easily reached 94 with 7.2 overs to spare.
