Zim authorities intensify crackdown against war vets

ZIMBABWEAN police on Monday 01 August 2016 arrested Victor Matemadanda and Francis Nhando, two senior leaders of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) following a public fallout with President Robert Mugabe recently.

Police arrested Matemadanda, the secretary-general of ZNLWVA and Nhando at Harare Magistrates Court, where they were following court proceedings for Douglas Mahiya, the liberation war veterans’ welfare organisation’s spokesperson, who was apprehended last week and charged with undermining authority of or insulting President Robert Mugabe in contravention of Section 33 (2) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.

Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights lawyers led by board chairperson Beatrice Mtetwa are representing Matemadanda and Nhando.
