EIA review a first for Zim

Zimbabwe is set to hold its first evaluation of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process at the end of the month, aimed at strengthening the effectiveness of assessments in promoting sustainable development.

The process has been one of the major approaches adopted by many countries after the Rio Earth Summit of 1992. It has recently been viewed as a major contributor towards green economies. However, in recent years, various players involved in the EIA process have reported challenges in its implementation, resulting in the objectives being offset.

The purpose of the EIA process is to ensure that development projects likely to have significant environmental consequences receive both meaningful environmental planning by their proponents and thorough review by the government before they are allowed to proceed.

All major projects must have environmental management plans that must be implemented during the project life cycle and the implementation of the plan must be monitored by the Environmental Management Agency.

The major objective of the conference is to evaluate the effectiveness of this process in Zimbabwe, with a view to strengthening it so that it achieves it goals and objectives. Government, consultants, project developers and investors will come together to address some of the major issues – including fees, monitoring of the implementation of plans and the capacity of experts involved.

Speaking at the conference will be environmental impact assessment experts, regulations and project proponents. The event is organised by CeneySith Private Business Corp in conjunction with the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa. – Contact Shingie at 0775521679 and Rowan at 0773242055.
