The Hub Un-Conference awards 2014

The Hub Un-conference at Shoko Festival 2014 was the venue for a thoroughly successful and grand set of talks and workshops on citizen journalism, new media and technology. The results that are immerging in the wake of the events are notable. The Un-conference was held at the Shoko site in the Environment Africa Dome and sparked intense debate, dialogue and the birthing and presenting of ideas.

One of the highlights of the Un-conference was the Hub Awards presentation and ceremony in association with the Wallace Global Fund and Zimbabwe Alliance. The presentations of the 13 nominated ideas in the fields of citizen journalism, alternative media and technology took place. These ideas addressed issues of accountability, transparency, social justice and service delivery with proposed online methods and solutions. Aside from the four winning finalists all 13 nominees are in communication with Magamba Network (the organizers of Shoko Festival) regarding their projects and how to realize them.

The winning ideas were Schooly (an online network for higher education pioneered by students from St. Georges), Spiked (an online voice for neglected media voices), Zuru (an animated character aimed at helping young women through issues they may face) and the IAMZIMBO (a vlog documenting Zimbabweans through interviews online) projects.

The Hub Awards ran at Shoko Festival’s Hub Un-conference at Alex Sports Club between the 25th & the 28th September. It featured speakers from Zimbabwe, France, the UK, Kenya and Brazil.
