Parents boycott paying fees

Parents with children attending school at Muvhuti primary school in Bikita district have boycotted paying school fees this term over allegations of embezzlement of funds by the school authorities.

The ministry of primary and secondary education has since dispatched auditors to the school to sniff out any financial irregularities. The parents are claiming that money meant to develop the school has been misused for years and attempts to have meetings over the issue have been thwarted by the school head, Raphael Gundidza.

One of the parents and former school development committee chairman, Nobert Chinyike, said parents would not pay school fees at the school unless they were assured that those who stole money would be brought to book.

“As parents we suspect that a lot of money meant to develop the school was abused hence we need an audit whose contents should be made public,” he said. The parents also want the school head to be suspended pending investigations.

According to some of the parents some building material meant to benefit the school allegedly went missing last year under mysterious circumstances. The headmaster of the school then hired a traditional healer to recover the missing material but nothing was recovered.

“One of the teachers after the traditional healer had visited the school started behaving in a strange manner and up to now he has never been seen at the school,” said a parent who declined to be named .

Gundidza refused to comment on the issue, but Masvingo provincial education director Fadzai Jirivengwa said auditors had been sent to the school. “They have not yet finished their work. We are worried about what is going on at the school and once we have finished our investigations we will take appropriate action,” he said.
