Zim Warriors move up Fifa table

Zimbabwe has received a major boost ahead of this weekend’s Fifa 2014 World Cup qualifier against Nigeria after rising three places up the global football rankings.

Egypt, on the other hand, slid the same number of places down the rankings Fifa released on Thursday.

According to the monthly rankings released from Zurich, Switzerland, Zimbabwe nonetheless remain a lowly 102 in the world while their opponents for the match scheduled for Sunday in Harare are now 71st.

Bottom-of-the-table Zimbabwe will be playing for pride at the National Sports Stadium following a disastrous campaign that has garnered two losses and a draw.

Egypt on the other hand top the group with a perfect record from the three games and are on course to qualify for their first Fifa World Cup finals since 1990.

Meanwhile, the top four on the Fifa/Coca-Cola world ranking remain unchanged, with Spain retaining a comfortable lead over Germany, Argentina and Croatia.

There has been significant movement in the top ten. The Netherlands, who did not play last month, have benefited from the devaluation of older matches and moved up to fifth at the expense of Portugal (6th, down 1), Colombia (7th, down 1) and England (9th, down 2).

Fifa will release the next rankings at the beginning of July “The upcoming Fifa Confederations Cup and the latest round of qualifiers for the 2014 Fifa World Cup Brazil will ensure plenty of movement in the next edition of the Fifa ranking,” Fifa stated.
