Charles Yohane is among the best- left backs to emerge from Zimbabwe. He starred for the Warriors at two African Nations Cup finals they qualified for. He gives us his best moments.

Best matches I played

A 2004 Nations Cup qualifier against Mali, which we drew 0-0 away and enhanced our chances of a debut appearance at the tournament. I had a competitive duel with their star player, Seydou Keita, then at Barcelona.

The other was a friendly against Ghana back in 1996, when they were preparing for the Nations Cup in South Africa. It also finished goalless. I had a good game against a side featuring Abedi Pele and Anthony Yeboah.

Best team I played for

The Caps United side of 1996, which scooped all but one of the trophies on offer, including the Charity Shield and the league title.

My Best team-mate

Alois Bunjira; we combined well back home until we came to South Africa.

Best goal I scored

It was during a World Cup preliminary qualifier away to Sudan, which we won 3-0. I received the ball on the left, beat two defenders and cut to the right where, outside the 18-yard box, I let fly a cracker with my ‘weaker’ right foot and gave the ‘keeper no chance.

My Best opponent

Cyril Nzama and Arthur Zwane, during their peak at Kaizer Chiefs. They were very difficult to contain. Nzama was tricky with his overlapping runs while Zwane was speedy and tricky down the right wing. Internationally, it was Nigerian Peter Odemwingie and Geremi Njitap of Cameroon.

I remember coming up against the physical Geremi at the Nations Cup in 2004 and we lost 5-3. In one incident he knocked me off the ball and taunted me, saying I looked so weak I had not eaten breakfast!

My Best coach

At Wits, I enjoyed playing under Bobbie Solomons. Had it not been for his good coaching methods, Wits would still be campaigning in the first division today. Sunday Chidzambga is a players’ coach. He always believes in his players and treats them with respect. I am also indebted to the late Ian Potterfield, who handed me my debut in 1996.

My Best venue

The Bidvest Wits Stadium under its normal conditions is one of the best pitches around.. Back home, I used to enjoy playing at the National Sports Stadium, which was almost fully-packed whenever the national team played there.

Best left back

I think Roberto Carlos, the Brazilian, is the best ever player for that position. He impressed me with his overlapping runs and attack-minded play for Real Madrid and Brazil. At the moment, Marcello, also of Brazil and Madrid is the best.

Best sportsperson from Zimbabwe

Peter Ndlovu is something else! He was a humble. He was playing in the biggest league in the world but would still turn up for the national team and keep his feet on the ground.

As captain of the senior national team, he had the best interests of the players at heart and put his team-mates’ interests ahead of his.

My Best moment

Playing at two African Nations Cup finals.
