Hope for rural communities

In a bid to enhance benefits derived from forests and woodlands, the Nyanga local authority is teaming up with villagers in a relatively unknown natural resources management and development concept.

Apart from planting trees and shrubs on a farmland to increase yields and income from crops, villagers in wards 19, 22, 23 and 24 were introduced to the principle of ‘’sustainable intensification’’ with the support of the local district council.

The initiative combines agro-forestry, conservation of soil and water, crop improvements, integrated pest management and combined livestock and fodder production. It will be implemented through village resource management committees.

Launching the intensification programme at a recent field day, District Administrator David Tsatsire urged communities to conserve forests and woodlands in order to reap more benefits.

“It is possible to enhance sustainable management of forests and woodlands and also increase agricultural output with fewer inputs”, said Joseph Tasosa, Executive Director of the Zimbabwe National Environment Trust.

The field day also heard that about 150 energy-saving Chingwa stoves, which use less wood, have been constructed in the district.
