Cinderella @ Reps Theatre (21–24 July)
The Dance Trust of Zimbabwe's National Ballet will be staging the ballet Cinderella at Reps Theatre on 21, 22, and 23 July at 7pm, with matinees at 2.30pm on 23 and 24 July.
The South African Ballet Theatre have very kindly given permission for their senior soloist, Humberto Ruiz Montero, to come to Harare and dance the part of Prince Charming.
National Ballet's Principal Dancers, Natalie Bradbury and Christie Clayton, will dance the parts of the Fairy Godmother and Cinderella. This well-known and well-loved ballet story promises to provide entertainment for the whole family.
There will be a Gala Evening on Friday, 22 July. Come dressed in your glitzy, glamorous gear. Mulled wine and snacks will be available from 6pm. Come dressed as Cinderella to the matinees and stand to win a prize.

Lorna Kelly Studio concert @ Greencroft Trinity Church (31 July)
Lorna Kelly Studio is presenting a concert of her students and her new ladies' vocal ensemble, Dulcet Tones.
A wide variety of songs will be sung, from baroque to modern English. Pianists are Ruth Chard and Jaap Kuiper.
Three junior singers and six senior students, including Abdul Secham, who won the Recital and Harry Tudball cups in the recent N.I.A.A. festival.

Leonard Bernstein conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in Mahler's Fourth, perhaps the most approachable of all his symphonies, ending with a child's vision of heaven. The evening will also include Herbert von Karajan conducting Strauss's autobiographical symphonic poem, "A Hero's Life".

Cate Blanchett returns to the role that won her international acclaim in the story of one woman's struggle to control love, defend her kingdom and secure her position. Reunited with Geoffrey Rush as Walsingham, and also starring Clive Owen as Sir Walter Raleigh, a dashing seafarer and courtier in whom Elizabeth finds fresh temptation, the film culminates in Spain's attempt to invade England with the great Armada.

Academy Sponsored Festival Week (25– 29 July)

The Academy’s Sponsored Festival Week is a fund-raising event which is held every second year. It works in much the same way as any other sponsored event: Academy students, parents and friends offer to perform at concerts held in the Sibson Hall and friends and family are asked to sponsor per minute of the performance. There will be concerts every evening at 5.15 p.m. and all will feature a wide range of performers including visitors such as Sharon de Kock and the Junior Odeion Quartet.

The Peggy Morris Choral Competition (27 July)

The Academy's annual competition features choirs from both primary and secondary schools. There are no set pieces and every choir will sing two items, one in English, so there will be a wide variety of music on offer.

Sharon de Kock is well-known to Bulawayo audiences as the second violinist of the Odeion Quartet but on this occasion she will be offering a solo recital:

• Schumann: Violin Sonata No.1 in A minor, Op.105
• Saint-Saëns: Violin Sonata No.1 in D minor, Op.75
• Vaughan Williams: The Lark Ascending
This is a splendid programme though the works in the second half have not been often heard in Bulawayo – if at all. The Saint-Saëns is a delightful piece with a dazzling moto perpetuo finale which should be much better known, whilst Vaughan Williams' Lark Ascending has been voted the most popular piece of classical music by British Classic FM listeners for several years in succession.

The Odeion Junior String Quartet, Petro Engelbrecht (Piano) (29 July)
Friday 29 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.
The Odeion Junior Quartet, like the Odeion itself, is all-female and is made up of outstanding students. They will be performing at the Stellenbosch Festival just before their visit to Bulawayo and fly to Amsterdam for a concert in August. Their programme will include:
• Mendelssohn: String Quartet in D major, Op.44/1
• Beethoven: String Quartet in D major, Op.18/3 – first movement
• Van Wyk: Two Elegies for String Quartet
• Fibich: Piano Quintet in D major, Op.42
Beethoven and Mendelssohn require no introduction, Van Wyk's Elegies have been described as "really a lovely piece" and Fibich was a contemporary and friend of Dvorak and his quintet is very much in the latter's style, a delightful work packed full of melody.

The Verandah Gallery 20th Annual Charity Art Exhibition (31 July)
Sunday, 31 July, 10am to 4pm, at 16 Woodholme Rd, Emerald Hill, Harare
2011 will be the 20th anniversary of this very popular annual charity art exhibition! It will feature the works of over 40 of Zimbabwe's highly talented artists. 25% commission from all sold paintings goes to the Emerald Hill Children's Home and the Emerald Hill School for the Deaf.
As always, the Detema Jazz Band will be there to entertain you. There will be a Wine Bar and the Vabatsiri Soroptimist Club will provide refreshments throughout the day. The Verandah Gallery 2012 calendar, "Children's Africa", will be launched – all the pictures are by children, and the originals will be on show/sale, along with a selection of other pictures that were submitted for the calendar – a delightful display!

It's Musicamp Time!!!
The time has come again when we round up musicians from all over the country and beyond to be a part of the amazing experience of Musicamp. Set-Design Classes @ Reps Theatre (Thursday evenings, July–October)
All plays and performances happen in a space

Linda Hyde will be running a set design course at Reps in July and October.
She will be looking at the set-design needs for upcoming Reps productions for this year:

• A Thousand Years – a situational comedy set in New York
• Robinson Crusoe – this year's pantomime – a set-designing banquet

Audition: A Thousand Clowns @ Reps (20 August)
Gloria Prentice is coming from Australia to direct "A Thousand Clowns" and is looking for adult male and juvenile actors to take parts.
"A Thousand Clowns" by Herb Gardner is a benchmark of Broadway comedy and produced one of the theatre's most beloved roles: unconventional Murray, uncle to precocious nephew Nick. Tired of writing cheap comedy gags for "Chipper the Chipmunk", a children's television star, Murray finds himself unemployed with plenty of free time to pursue his … pursuits. Lectured by his conventional brother, Arnold, and hounded by "the system", Murray is paid a visit by bickering, uptight social workers, Sandra and Albert, and finds himself solving their problems as well as most of his own.

Song of the Carnivores Song-Writing Competition (deadline 1 September)
Write the lyrics for a song and have a chance of winning $500, and of the song being performed at the 2012 Bulawayo Music Festival
The song should consist of seven verses, each of eight lines. The first verse should be an introduction, followed by a verse about each of the large carnivores – Lion, Spotted Hyena, Leopard, Cheetah and Wild Dog – and then a concluding verse.

The song should reflect the life, the beauty and the endangered nature of each carnivore. It should emphasise that each species is an important part of our heritage and each is important to biodiversity, and that the bush would be empty without them. However, the song should end on a positive note – we can make a difference.
The aim of the project is to inspire young people, especially those in their early teens, to care about the future of Zimbabwe's wildlife and be proud of their heritage.
Consideration will be given to the winning entry being put to music and performed at the 2012 Bulawayo Music Festival.

Colour Africa 2011, Munich, Germany (July)
An exhibition of Zimbabwean contemporary art comprising paintings, graphics and mixed media sculptures by twenty artists to open at Amalienstrasse 81 in Munich on Wednesday, 6 July, 2011.
This initiative stems from Verena Nolte, an arts consultant of Munich and trustee of the Gallery Delta Foundation for Art and the Humanities, and Gallery Delta, over the past year. The venue is in the most important street and quarter for art in all of Munich. Further, the exhibition coincides with the 15th year of the twinning of the cities of Harare and Munich and will be supported in part by the City of Munich Art and Cultural Department. We hope that the exhibition will attract as much interest and success as that of the first 'Colour Africa' at the Rathaus Gallery in the centre of Munich in year 2000, and again elevate our artists and their work at a prestigious venue and location on an international platform which they so justly deserve.
