Sables eye African pride

Zimbabwe Under-19 rugby side is hoping to maintain their dominance at the Confederations of African Rugby Championships as they seek to use their home advantage.

The Young Sables coach, Brighton Chivandire, expressed confidence in the country’s junior rugby as well as appreciating the continental board’s decision to declare Zimbabwe as the host this year.

“It is a great experience for our youngsters who are participating and those who aspire to be in the team in future. They get to experience the atmosphere and the competitive nature of the tournament, which is a great stage to prepare them for international events,” he said.

Zimbabwe won the continental championships in Namibia last year to win a ticket to represent Africa in the 2011 JWRT held in Georgia, this year. They finished a disappointing eighth place in the eight nations’ tournament but the Young Sables mentor is taking this week’s African junior rugby showdown as a stage to refocus.

“The result in Georgia was not something we expected but we don’t want to live regretting; it was a good experience for our boys and it will be great having them there again next year.”
