$2m upgrade for Munyati Power Station

MUNYATI - Zimbabwe has clinched a deal with the United Kingdom to acquire state of the art equipment to optimise production at Munyati Thermal Power Station.

Speaking at a tour of the power station last week, Parastatals minister Gorden Moyo said the consignment was valued at $2 million. The coal-driven station, located about 29km north of Kwekwe on the main Harare-Bulawayo road, was established in 1938.

At present it generates 35 Megawatts of electricity, but has a potential of 90 Megawatts.

Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority spokesperson Fullard Gwasira said the spare parts would be used in refurbishing the Milling Plant responsible for crushing coal to power the generation of electricity and also to increase capacity of the boilers.

“What we want is to ensure that Munyati operates at full capacity,” Gwasira said.

Munyati is one of the country’s five power stations with others located in Harare, Bulawayo, Hwange and Kariba. Hwange Thermal Power Station has the highest capacity of 920 MW, but currently only 350MW is being produced due to viability challenges faced by ZESA.

Kariba station, the only hydro power generating plant in the country, has six units of 150MW installed.
