Measles breakout sparks campaign

measlesHARARE - Measles has broken out in many regions of the country, prompting a nationwide vaccination and immunisation campaign, according to Health officials. 72 cases had been reported by Monday in 14 districts, and officials said the outbreak was spreading to new areas.

Most of the cases were among members of religious groups that shunned conventional medical treatment. As a result, the authorities this week launched a nationwide vaccination and immunisation campaign against measles and other preventable diseases for children under five years old.

But they said they were meeting resistance to the campaign by members of some religious groups. The heavy rains were also hampering efforts to distribute drugs and other medicines.
