Gun smuggling from Zim – SA Police

South African police have assembled a team of specialists to investigate gun smuggling from Zimbabwe, according to an SABC News report.

Police are reported to have seized 50 firearms at OR Tambo International Airport. The arms cache was found on an international airliner that flew from Zimbabwe to South Africa.

Another arms cache was discovered that included ammunition, mortars, hand grenades and tear gas canisters in a warehouse in Strydom Park, north of Johannesburg.

This news comes on the back of new statistics on the levels of crime in South Africa. Police have announced that house robbery, business robbery and truck hijackings had increased in the six months from April to September.

President Thabo Mbeki acknowledged that the issue of crime needs urgent attention. He said that he has taken a hard look at the entire criminal justice system, but urged all communities to come together to help fight crime.
